SibMED entered the world best university rankings

19.09.2019

The third issue of The Three University Missions 2019 Moscow International University Ranking has been released and SibMed has entered the group 701-800 worldwide and 25-32 group among Russian universities. Thus, Siberian State Medical University retained the status of the best non-capital medical university in Russia, letting forward only two medical universities of St. Petersburg and Moscow, respectively.

“The Moscow International University Ranking is an intrinsically new academic rating, which for the first time includes all three key missions of the university: education, science and interaction with society. The fact that SibMed manages to maintain the third place in Russia according to the most diverse rankings indicates the objectivity of the assessment. The Three University Missions ranking, along with the standard parameters, measures the contribution to the societal development. For medical universities, the importance of a societal role is obvious, ”said Olga Kobyakova, the Rector of the Siberian State Medical University.

In 2019 the Three University Missions ranking became more meaningful - for the first time, the number of universities in the published list exceeded 1000, which corresponds to the modern standard of the world's leading rankings agencies. The latest ranking includes 1,200 universities from 79 countries, including 74 Russian universities. In 2018, the list included the top 333 universities in the world. Another innovation is the international examination of the ranking’s results with the participation of 16 authoritative international experts, each of whom was sent preliminary ranking results.

The idea of starting new rankings agency was supported by leading universities in Russia, China, India, Iran, Turkey, and Japan. The ranking methodology has been a large-scale public discussion in Russia and abroad, which was attended by over 100 universities. The membership of the ranking’s expert council includes 25 experts from 16 countries.

To compile the ranking, only objective criteria approved by international experts were used; reputation polls are completely excluded. Moreover, the range of information sources for the ranking is much wider than traditionally examined in major rankings agencies as QS and THE. Information sources are open data from the official websites of universities and national authorities, as well as data from independent international sources: Clarivate Analytics (a provider of data and metrics from InCites and the Global Institutional Profiles Project (GIPP)); Elsevier (owner of the bibliographic and abstract database Scopus); Coursera and edX online mass education platforms; publicly accessible multilingual universal encyclopedia Wikipedia; search engines Google, Yandex, Baidu; social networks Facebook, Twitter, VK, Sina Weibo; Alexa, one of the world leaders in web analytics; websites of international student olympiads; IREG List of International Academic Awards science awards websites.

The creation of “Three University Missions” ranking was initiated by the Russian Union of Rectors in accordance with the order of the President of Russia V.V. Putin. The ranking operator is the Association of Rating, Ranking and Other Performance Evaluations Makers (ARM), where the leading ranking and research centers are members.
