SibMed community in times of Coronavirus

13.04.2020

More than 140 students and residents of SibMed are helping medical institutions in Tomsk Region.

“About 80 student are volunteering in the SibMed Hospital. They are helping medical staff with measuring body temperature for all incoming patients. Also, our students are busy taking calls in the Center for Medical and Pharmaceutical Information, processing data in the Center for Disaster Medicine, and working at the regional headquarters of the All-Russian Popular Front, helping elderly and mobility impaired people in isolation. As for residents, they help doctors in medical institutions of the Tomsk Region,” said Olga Kobyakova, Rector of the Siberian State Medical University.

Students that are taking calls received short intensive training to answer all types of questions. Earlier they were submitted all necessary written and visual information. “We were given a lot of teaching materials, which we needed to familiarize ourselves with before we started receiving calls. We receive a lot of calls a day. Basically, we answer a lot of questions on what medicines are needed and where to find them. People who come from abroad also call us to tell information regarding their arrival and travel, they are especially interested if they have to follow any specific quarantine rules, what are their next steps, ” said Madina Mukusheva, a volunteer at the Siberian State Medical University.

Furthermore, SibMed campus hosts regional volunteer groups that on daily basis provide help to elderly people and those unable to leave their homes in the purchase of essential goods, medicines and payment for housing services.  The volunteer center is opened daily from 09:00 to 18:00. They receive calls on the line previously set by the All-Russian Popular Front (phone: +7-800-200-34-11). The number of volunteers is growing every day. Today, not only medical school students can provide help but anybody who wishes to do so. All volunteers are provided with appropriate personal protective equipment: masks, gloves, desinfection.

Earlier SibMed also organized online course for doctors, medical students and anyone interested in information about COVID-19. The course includes data on modern taxonomy of coronaviruses, pathogenetic features of the virus, preventive measures and treatment. A separate lecture is devoted to acute respiratory distress syndrome as a complication of the infection.
